It is time once again for the holidays to be upon us and for our community to come together and make it an awesome “Christmas on Market” event. This year the theme for the parade is “Tis the Season.”
There is prize money for Float entries, Decorated Golf Carts and ATV’s. (Remember you must be 17 years old to drive either Golf Carts or ATV’s).
- Prize money for float entries: 1st – $125.00, 2nd – $100.00, 3rd – $75.00, 4th – $50.00
- Prize money for Golf Cart/ATV: 1st – $30.00, 2nd – $20.00, 3rd – $10.00
Please help to make this year’s Christmas on Market Parade a great success by entering something fun, lighted and memorable. Christmas on Market Parade is on November 16th. Parade starts at 6:00 pm.
Judging for floats, Golf Carts and ATV’s is at 5:00 pm. Line-up is at the west end of Market Street (around Pizza Hut and BP Station). There will be parade personnel there with clip boards and a line-up sheet. Check with them for your number in the parade route. There will be stakes in the ground with numbers on them, after receiving your number: 1.) Find your numbered stake 2.) Park by your numbered stake facing Market (unless you stake is on Market, then face East) 3.) Wait for the parade to begin.

Mix up your best batch of chili & enter in the “Chili Cook Off” which will take place at the Senior Center, Osage City. Bring your entry to the Senior Center prior to 4:00. Judging will begin promptly at 4:00. Chamber Bucks will be given to the top 3 places. 1st Place – $50;
2nd Place – $30; 3rd Place – $20.
Following the cook off at 4:30-5:30 pm, will be a chili feed open to the public. The cost will be a free will donation for a bowl of chili & cinnamon roll.

Opportunity Zones, a new economic development tool enacted by the Federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, offers investors preferential tax treatment for capital gains invested in low income communities designated as Opportunity Zones. The program is designed to encourage long term investment in economically distressed areas and promote economic growth. These investments will provide support to projects focused on a wide array of issues including, for example, downtown revitalizations, improvements to workforce housing, and expansions of industrial parks and innovation districts.
In April of 2018, 74 census tracts across Kansas were nominated to be designated by the U.S. Department of Treasury as Kansas Opportunity Zones. These Designated Opportunity Zones are now eligible to receive investments through Qualified Opportunity Funds to spur economic growth in their communities.
For the investor, the Opportunity Zone program offers tax incentives including deferral and reduction of capital gains taxes when the gain is invested in a Qualified Opportunity Fund and maintained for a period of at least five years. Investors can defer tax on any prior gains invested in a Qualified Opportunity Fund (QOF) until the earlier of the date on which the investment is sold or exchanged, or December 31, 2026. If the Qualified Opportunity Fund investment is held for longer than 5 years, there is a 10% exclusion of the deferred gain, after 7 years, the 10% becomes 15%. Additionally, if the investor holds the QOF investment for at least ten years, the investor is eligible for a permanent exclusion from taxable income of capital gains accrued on the QOF investment.
Osage City and its census tract was the only Opportunity Zone designated in Osage County and the City’s Industrial Committee is working with the State Department of Commerce and experts to maximize the impact of this development tool. The committee is currently trying to identify housing and commercial projects that are well suited to take advantage of this designation. Tricia Gundy, committee chairman, wants to thank everyone that signed up the for the Fall City Wide Garage Sales. This is a great event for the whole community and a great time to get rid of all your “stuff” that you don’t need any more. You all know the old saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. So start putting away your stuff for next year and be ready for the 2020 Spring City Wide which will be held April 17-18.
Just a reminder that this garage sale is put on by the Osage City Chamber of Commerce and the money raised goes to provide a scholarship for an Osage City High School Senior girl & boy. Two reasons that it is important that your name is listed on the map, is that everyone will know that you are having a garage sale & the more names on the map, the more money goes toward the scholarship fund. For the third consecutive year, Osage City hosted the bicycle riders as they traveled through Osage City on the “Rush the Rails” event on Saturday, October 5, 2019. The Chamber of Commerce hosted the event at Peterson’s Assisted Living, as Osage City was designated as one of the rest/break points for the participants. The Chamber of Commerce were pleased to take this opportunity to welcome the participants to our community and express our generous hospitality. Participants enjoyed snacks provided by the Osage City Kiwanis Club and the Osage City Lions Club, sandwiches, water refills, which were provided at the Assisted Living. Osage City and surrounding communities were welcomed and encouraged to come and visit with the participants that passed through our community throughout the day from approximately 10:00 am to 3:30 pm.
Oct. 5, 2019, marked the 7th annual Osage City Chamber of Commerce Festival of Beer. Being held at the Fairground Pavilion, area patrons enjoyed a great event, live music from Skip the Bridge with Osage City native Christian Isaacs, great food from Saucy Lady BBQ not to mention tasted well over 100 beers! The Chamber Beer Fest has turned into a great event for local and area folk as it allows all to sample several Kansas breweries and many regional and national brews.
There was a raffle table with beer related items along with prizes donated by area businesses. Ticket sales benefited the Osage City Chamber of Commerce, which in turn in the past have benefited many organizations, community projects and most recently, beautifying the downtown business district with hanging flower baskets and replacement welcome banners.
The Osage City Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce it will be hosting a holiday community dinner. An invitation is extended to anyone that would like to attend & also showing appreciation to those that support & participate in the events throughout the year. The dinner will be held on November 23, 2019, at the Osage County Senior Center. More details regarding the time & activities for the event will soon follow.
Planning has begun for the annual Christmas on Market celebration November 16. We encourage you to mark the date on your calendar and plan to shop local that weekend as many of our hometown businesses will be offering great opportunities for holiday gifts. The theme this year is: Christmas on Market 2019: “Tis the Season”.
In addition to shopping, activities will be held throughout the day including breakfast, lunch, visits with Santa, Jingle Bell Run 5K, in-store activities, chili cook-off, chili feed, gingerbread house building, craft show, raffle drawing, Kansas City Chief’s Wolf mascot, Topeka Drum Corp, free photo booth, free poker run, face painting, bake sale, emergency services showcase, fire truck rides, Polar Express train ride, ping pong drop, story time, quarter bingo and the traditional lighted Christmas parade. Janet Bosworth, organizer of the craft show is hoping this will be one of the best craft shows in years. The craft show has changed locations this year & will be held at the St. Patrick’s Church, St. Brigid’s Hall. The annual Chamber of Commerce Member Mixer will be held October 26 at the Osage City Golf Course. Please mark your calendar & plan to attend an enjoyable evening of food, wine & beer tasting & activities. Attendees will have the opportunity to taste a variety of wines or enjoy a variety of brews. They will also be serving appetizing snacks to enjoy with the wine or beer. Along with the wine tasting and visiting with your friends, there will be a putting contest held throughout the evening and be sure to enter the raffle drawings for some awesome giveaways. Businesses will be distributing tickets to some of their customers which will invite them to also come for the event.
The evening will also be the kick off for the 2020 Chamber of Commerce membership drive. The Chamber is always looking for new members with new ideas to help make Osage City a better community to live in. Current members may also plan to renew their membership. A “first time” incentive is being offered to regular memberships. Existing members are encouraged to invite potential new members. A misunderstanding that many people have regarding being a member of the Osage City Chamber of Commerce, is that you have to own a business to be belong and this is currently not the case. The Chamber offers an Associate Membership which invites any person to be a member of the Chamber of Commerce. The types of memberships are listed below.
Types
Regular Memberships – Any person, firm, association, corporation, partnership or estate having an interest in the objectives of the organization shall be eligible for membership. Any regular member shall have the discretion to designate their voting member.
Non-Profit Memberships – non-profit organization being a regular member with a member designated for voting purposes.
Associate Memberships – Any person having an interest in the objectives of the organization. Associate Members have no voting rights, nor may they serve as an officer or director, unless otherwise approved by the Board, but they will have all other membership privileges and responsibilities.
A ribbon cutting was held at the Sept. 17, 2019, Osage City Chamber of Commerce meeting and pleased to welcome K. A. B Tire Service as a new member. Gerad Fagan is the owner of K.A.B Tire Service, which is located at 818 S. Ninth St., Osage City.
Gerad’s slogan is: Service to your door. They offer mobile tire service and sales for almost all tires. Lawn/garden, ATV, car/pickup, semi and tractor tires. Their mobile trailer includes a tire charger and balancer and they are able go to your home, job, farm even the grocery store if need be. Their travel range is around 40 miles from Osage City.

Osage City Fall Citywide Garage Sale time is just around the corner. Sign up now to get on the map. This is a great opportunity to get rid of some of that “stuff” you never use and free up some space. The Citywide Garage Sale is set for September 20-21.
To sign up, stop by Peterson’s Assisted Living (Tricia Gundy), Edward Jones Investments (Robyn Williams) or the First National Bank (Kathy Ayers). Tricia revised the area map for the spring sale and made it more user friendly, it provided a chart for the type of items at the garage sales. Tricia plans to continue doing this for the fall sale, so she will need your name – as you want it listed on the map, address, a phone number in case of questions about the sale, if you are having the sale Friday and Saturday or Saturday only, what area you are on the map, type of items that you will be selling, for example: children clothing; adult clothing; furniture; collectibles; kitchen items; household items; craft items; miscellaneous and a $5 donation fee.
The proceeds go towards a scholarship awarded every year to two Osage City High School graduates that are going to college. The 2019 scholarships were awarded to Aliks Serna and Royce Cowan. The deadline for adding a sale to the garage sale map is Sept. 17, at 5:00 p.m.

In recent years the Tent Raising and Morning Tour has become a popular program for families and interested community members. It is presented in a way everyone, young and old can learn many interesting facts about the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus Family. This is a special part of Circus Day that should not be missed! On circus day, our performers bring the magic of the circus to life in each 90-minute performance. This year’s lineup includes an All-Star group of performers and entertainers that include: Miss Simone and her breath taking single trapeze, Miss Paulina’s proud “ Big & Little” prancing ponies, The Arlise Troupe on their wild and crazy unicycles, Natalie’s American Eskimo Escapades, Miss Georgia displaying flexibility to the extreme and for the first time, the Wheel of Destiny & Tight Rope by The Perez Family. The Osage City Chamber of Commerce is proud to offer you the opportunity to honor a veteran or someone currently active in the military while at the same time celebrating Veterans Day or Memorial Day.
The cost is $150 for a large banner (26” x 50”) with your chosen military member on it. The banners will be located on the light poles along 6th Street on both sides of the street from the American Legion to the Post Office. The banners will hang for one month in conjunction with Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day for three consecutive years. After the three year term is completed, we will contact you to see if you would like a new banner to be hung for an additional three years or if you would like the banner returned to you.

At this time, we only have 16 brackets on eight poles so this is on a first come, first serve basis determined by postmark August 26, 2019, on envelope or personally delivered to 126 Ellinwood St., Osage City.

July marks the second month of recognizing a “2019 Yard of the Month”, sponsored by the Osage City Chamber of Commerce. Recognition will be during the months of June through September. The selection of the yard takes place during the first few days of each month. In appreciation of the beauty and hard work for the selected yard, the home owners will receive a $25 Osage City Chamber Buck Certificate to be used at an Osage City business.
We are pleased to announce that Terry & Mica Lindbloom’s yard has been selected for the month of July. Their home is located at 850 Romine Ridge.
Obviously with Mica’s TLC & Terry’s craftsmanship, they have a beautiful front yard along with a peaceful oasis in their back yard. Together, they created & built the fountain as one of the focal points in the back yard. The base started as a 3’x4’ hole which included a concrete base, adding the concrete pillar which holds two individual shelfs & a concrete ball adorned with bright red stones.
Be sure to mark your calendar for the Osage City annual Community Family Day and Fireworks Spectacular which will be held on Thursday, July 4, hosted by the Osage City Chamber of Commerce. Plan to come out and spend the evening. Plans are coming together to include an exciting day/evening of activities for the families to enjoy.
Starting out the day of activities will be a youth fishing tournament sponsored by ORBIS which will begin at 8:00 a.m. at Huffman Park. A disc golf tournament will begin with a flex start at 8:00 a.m. at the disc golf course by the Jones Park ball diamonds. All other activities and food vendors will begin at 6:00 p.m. Activities leading up to the fireworks display include bounce play sets, sponsored by Conrad Carlson Foundation, carnival games, firecracker walk (aka cake walk), quarter bingo, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, live band, food and snacks provided by various vendors, Lions Club pie and ice cream social and Kiwanis watermelon feed. Some of the activities will be free & some will be a minimal fee.
Some new activities have been added to the event this year including turtle races, sack races for the kids, so kids, when it gets closer to the time, start looking for a pet turtle (BYOT=Bring Your Own Turtle) to enter in the turtle race and start your jumping skills to enter into the sack race.The sack race will be divided into two age groups, 6-8 and 9-11.
